In your own words, Digital literacy

   Question #1
"  "Simply put, we can’t keep preparing students for a world that doesn’t exist. We can’t keep ignoring the formidable cognitive skills they’re developing on their own. And above all, we must stop disparaging digital prowess just because some of us over 40 don’t happen to possess it. An institutional grudge match with the young can sabotage an entire culture."
What Virginia Heffernen is trying to get across is that this digital gap in generations could potentially harm future generations to come. Everyone who is teaching this generation all grew up without this technology and refuses to learn for the sake of their students. They continue to prepare their students for a world they grew up in but what doesn’t exist anymore. In a world where technology is rapidly growing and students are learning at a constant rate, teachers should keep up with this so students can be properly taught the new world. I agree with all this and our education system needs a huge overhaul. Education and technology should be integrated as soon as students come into grade school. When I went into college I felt like I was really unprepared with the digital aspect college brought. All grade school taught me was how to research online and how to type. Unless you took a webpage class or some other tech class which by the way isn’t mandatory you were not taught how to operate the web. For the sake of humanity I feel like the old style of teaching and the new tech way of teaching should both be present for the best of both worlds for greater generations to come.

Literacy timeline

Comic Books-Loved them, read them daily, even created my own
Older Brothers-Challenged me to get better to compete with them
School-Showed me the art of music and how it is a form of literacy
Storytelling-I love stories and telling them (reason I like comic books) found how to tell stories through music
Music-My outlet where I can express my emotions and thoughts, learned to play many instruments
Hip Hop-Artist MF DOOM showed me a different style of hip hop in which I grew to love (helped me get into it because of his wacky comic book style
Making Own Music- Now I make music using a program called FL Studio where I can blend my knowledge of music and make complete beats that I’m proud to say are mine.

Summary & Response

In the personal narrative “Two Questions” by Lynda Barry she shows that one must not give up their creative mind for the gratitude of others. Lynda Barry is a cartoonist that displays here emotions and thoughts through pictures. Lynda starts with saying she loved to draw because of the free flowing thought process and how it was her own. Then she starts drawing things that are only good to her peers and not necessarily to her. Lynda then realizes that the appreciation by others was not important as her own opinion on it and decides to start drawing for her again. She ends her personal literacy telling kids to come back to drawing and to not quit if someone says it’s not good. I completely agree with this narrative in many ways. Drawing from my own experiences I learned many ways to convey my message or thoughts through art. I also feel that no one should tell you what is good or bad, only you should judge if you like it or not. Many people limit their creativity because they are afraid of what someone will say about it. I use to make comic books as a young kid not for my classmates to enjoy but for my own amusement. If I had only created them for others they might have not been as special to me or how I wanted them to be. I say to all those writers and artists keep doing what makes you feel good and not what others want from you.

Why Is Writing Important?

I am currently enrolled in Criminal Justice and plan on being a detective. Writing and communication play a big role in making this happen from in to school to on the job. As a detective you must have great communication skills to gather evidence from witnesses and/or suspects. After all is said and done you need to write a report where the use of writing steps in. This form of writing is very structural and must follow a strict guideline. I will need to improve on my sentence structure for reports and my persuasive skills for interviewing.

1     Blog Free Write

.      A blog has many features like the comment section and many others. A blog differs from print sources because blogs are usually openings to discussions rather than an argument already stated.
2.      Hourihan feels like blogs get people talking more in a discussion matter and people can update more frequently than anything else which makes conversations happen more often.
3.      It will help us stay connected to our assignments and reflect on what others think about the class and maybe post useful tips to help one another. Not that I can see unless you are a private person and doesn’t like their thoughts up for everyone to see.
4.      It lets people publish their own material with ease and everyone can see it instantly.
